The Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) and the Utrecht Centre for Water Ocean and Sustainability Law (UCWOSL) organize a symposium discussing the pertinent legal issues arising from the PCA Award on The South China Sea Arbitration (The Republic of Philippines v. The People’s Republic of China). The symposium will take place at the Raadzaal of the Utrecht University School of Law (Achter Sint Pieter 200) on 7 December 2016. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will hold its second international conference on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) at UNESCO headquarters in Paris (France) from 15-17 March 2017. The conference is being jointly organised with the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG-MARE) of the European Commission. More information is available here.
The Judgment of the Tribunal on the Preliminary Objections raised by Italy on 11 March 2016 in The M/V “Norstar” Case (Panama v. Italy) was delivered today. The Tribunal finds that it has jurisdiction to adjudicate the dispute and decides that Panama’s application is admissible. According to the Application, the dispute concerns the arrest and detention of the M/V “Norstar”, a Panamanian-flagged oil tanker. More details can be found in the Tribunal’s Judgement.
