Daniel Vignes Prize (4th Edition)

The International Association for the Law of the Sea (AssIDMer) welcomes applications for its Prix Daniel Vignes (4th Edition), “a prize for the best article published in a journal or a collective work, to disseminate knowledge of the international law of the sea”. The deadline for applications is 30 November 2022. The prize will be officially awarded during the VIII Ordinary Meeting of the Association in 2023. The call is available here.

Moot Court: 2022 China International Law of the Sea Competition 

Wuhan University China Institute of Boundary and Ocean Studies (CIBOS) and the Chinese Society of the Law of the Sea have announced the 2022 China International Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition, The Case Concerning Iron Fertilization in the Eleanor Sea (The Republic of Futuna v. The Kingdom of Ellis), to be held 22-23 October 2022, online. Registration is open until 31 May 2022. For more information see here.

The Day of Crisis Competition 2022

The Hague Academy of International Law will host the student competition, Day of Crisis, 29-30 April 2022, in the Hague (The Netherlands). Registration closes 20 January 2022. According to the Intelligence Briefing No 1 of 2021, “themes are related to activities of espionage, fisheries and other maritime activities, causes and consequences of climate change, international investment, and arbitration”. for more information see here.

Moot Court: NILOS Moot Court Competition 2022

The Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) has announced the third edition of the NILOS Moot Court Competition, with the international rounds scheduled to take place from 9-13 May 2022, online. The Competition Case is expected to be published 15 October 2021 and team registration (free of charge) is open until 15 December 2021. Registration for judges is expected to open soon.

Moot Court: III ITLOS Competition of BILOS – Judges

As previously announced, the Brazilian Institute for the Law of the Sea (IBDMAR/BILOS) will hold the III International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition, November 8-10 2021, online. In addition to the call for teams, BILOS has issued a call for judges.

Competitions: IBDMAR/BILOS III ITLOS Moot Court Competition

The Brazilian Institute for the Law of the Sea (IBDMAR/BILOS) announced its III International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition. The Moot Court event will be held remotely (online) on November 8-10 2021.  The keywords of the III ITLOS Moot Court Competition hypothetical case are: Small Island Developing States, fisheries access agreement, traditional fishing rights, pollution from land-based sources, pollution from vessels, plastics and waste management. Moot Court: China International Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition, 2021

The Chinese Society for the Law of the Sea is organizing another edition of its International Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition. This year it will be hosted by the Wuhan University China Institute of Boundary and Ocean Studies and it is scheduled to take place on 23-24 October 2021 in Wuhan, China. This competition simulates proceedings under Part XV of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the International Court of Justice or an Annex VII Arbitral Tribunal. Essay Competition: Space for Youth

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) welcome essay submissions to their Space for Youth Competition, this year’s topic being, Space as a tool to address climate challenges: examples from local communities. Unite Ideas: Reboot the Ocean Challenge

Unite Ideas (a United Nations platform) shall host a global hackathon, entitled, Reboot The Ocean, welcoming submissions on 5 critical challenges identified for a healthy and productive ocean by 2030: (1) Sustainable seafood; (2) Set sail for decarbonized shipping; (3) Harnessing ocean electricity; (4) Mapping the ocean; and (5) End waste entering the ocean. Moot Court: Telders 2020

The 43rd Edition of the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition will be held from Thursday 4 June until Saturday 6 June 2020. This year’s case Questions relating to Sovereignty in the Lamma Sea (Quntong v. Discovia) involves issues on the definition of island and rock under international law, as well as the conduct of private vessels and fishing activities on the EEZ. This competition is open to all European university students who are currently enrolled in their bachelors or masters phase of their study. Moot Court: ITLOS – Underwater Historical and Cultural Heritage

The 2019 edition will be hosted by the Wuhan University China Institute of Boundary and Ocean Studies and it is scheduled to take place in early November 2019 in Wuhan, China. Moot Court: Chinese Society of the Law of the Sea, 2018

The Chinese Society of the Law of the Sea (CSLOS) is organizing its first International Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition. The event will be hosted by the China University of Political Science and Law and it will take place on October 27 – 28, 2018 in Beijing, China. The “Case Concerning the Interpretation of UNCLOS and Delimitation of Maritime Boundaries”, opposing the “Republic of Tranquilita” to the “Republic of Independent Marinnes”, has already been made available here. Teams that are interested in participating in the competition of this year must register before August 15, 2018. More information can be found here.

Moot Court: ITLOS – underwater historical and cultural heritage

The Brazilian Institute for the Law of the Sea (IBDMAR), in partnership with the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), shall host their first ITLOS moot court competition, Republic of Disali Vs. Kingdom of Brismania2-4 August 2018, at the Federal University of Bahia (Salvador, Bahia, Brazil). Registration is open until 1 June 2018.

International Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition 2018-2019

The Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) has announced the first edition of the International Law of the Sea (ILOS) Moot Court Competition, which is scheduled to take place in Utrecht in May 2019. Interested universities will be requested to register by 1 November 2018. Depending on the number of participating teams, the organisers may request the organisation of regional or national rounds.

Moot Court: Telders Case 2015 on “The Faranian Shark-Finning Dispute”

This year’s Telders International Law Moot Court Competition, organized by the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, will be Law of the Sea related. The organizers have just announced that the participants will have to build on a mock case called The Faranian Shark-Finning Dispute which discusses a mock treaty called The Pacific Shark Sanctuary Convention 2013 . You can find the case here and more information about how to participate in the competition here. The deadline for application for participation by Universities ends on Monday 3 November 2014.
