The University of Lapland is holding a conference on 20th February 2015 entitled “new challenges facing the Arctic ocean and other fragile seas”. The event occurs at the Arctic Centre in Rovaniemi, Finland, and there will be an online broadcast here (you can enter as a guest). The program of the conference is available here.

The largest annual maritime conference in Europe will be held in Piraeus (Greece) on 28 and 29 May 2015. This year, the conference will focus on the role of ports and coasts as gateways to maritime growth. Many events are being organised: political sessions, workshops, face-to-face meetings, exhibitions and a networking reception. More information can be found here.

The Centre for Maritime Research (MARE) will host the 8th People and Sea Conference in Amsterdam on the 24-26 June 2015. The theme shall be ‘Geopolitics of the Oceans’. Participants can propose the presentation of papers, posters and other visual materials. The deadline for submissions is January 31st, 2015. More information and submission forms can be found here.

The Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) of the University of Porto is organizing the conference ‘20 anos da entrada em vigor da CNUDM: Portugal e os recentes desenvolvimentos no Direito do Mar’ (20 years of entry into force of UNCLOS: Portugal and the recent developments in the Law of the Sea). The conference will have two sessions, one on maritime spaces and natural resources and the second on the planning, management and control of the maritime space. The event will be held at the Salão Nobre of the Law Faculty of the University of Porto on 29 of October. Attendance is free but subject to registration. The whole event will be held in Portuguese.

An article on the South China Sea disputes by Robert Beckman and Clive Schofield was recently published in The International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law. In this Seminar – happening the 9th of October – the authors will highlight the main points in their article and explain why they believe their suggestions could further the peaceful resolution of the maritime disputes in the South China Sea. The University of Nantes (France) is organizing a conference entitled “The Legacy of the Slave Ship” to be presented by Markus Rediker. The event happens on October 14 and the registration form can be found here.

On 13-14 November 2014, Ghent University (UGent) will be hosting an international two-day conference at the occasion  of the twentieth anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The conference, organized in partnership with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Université catholique de Louvain – Mons (UCL-Mons) and the Université libre de Bruxelles, will pause at the success of the Montego Bay Convention in governing the use of the oceans. At the same time, it will look ahead and examine to what extent the Convention is properly equipped to withstand the various challenges ahead, including, for instance, competing territorial and maritime claims in the South and East China Seas and in the Arctic, the fight against piracy, future exploitation of the deep sea bed, ocean pollution, the increased recourse to the UNCLOS dispute settlement regime, etc. More information here. Registration and conference programme are available here.

The ESIL Law of the Sea Interest Group has already announced the selected presentations for the side event ‘International Law… and the Sea’ which will take place on 3 September 2014, at 16.30-18.30, in the occasion of the 10th Anniversary Conference of the European Society of International Law. The speakers have been selected through call for papers and will present a series of papers which focus on topics where the law of the sea has influenced the development of international law.The side event is open to anyone who have an interest in law of the sea issues and generally in international law. More information on the presentations can be found here.

The Refugee Law Initiative, University of London, and the Department of Law at Queen Mary University of London presents a conference titled ‘ “Boat Refugees” and migrants at sea: a comprehensive approach – integrating maritime security with human rights’. This conference aims to comprehensively address the contemporary phenomenon of ‘boat migration’ with a holistic approach. We will consider its multiple facets, combining knowledge from several disciplines and regions of the world, with a view to making a decisive contribution to our understanding of current trends, against the background of the fragmentary responses adopted and innumerable tragedies occurred thus far. The Center for Oceans Law and Policy is organising its Annual Conference at the University of Bergen, June 26-27. The theme is “Challenges of the Changing Arctic: Continental Shelf, Navigation, and Fisheries”. A preliminary program is available here.

The Network of Experts on the Legal Aspects of Maritime and Safety and Security (COST Action IS1105)  is organizing a plenary conference on “Maritime safety and environmental protection in Europe”. The event takes place at the University of Porto, May 23, 2014. You can find the application form here, the program here and the poster here.

The Centre for International Law of the National University of Singapore is organizing a conference on the topic of Arctic Governance. The event takes place on May 23, 2014. The main speaker is Captain J. Ashley Roach, JAGC, from the U.S. Navy (retired). The entrance is free and you can find more information here.

The ESIL Interest Group on Migration and Refugee Law, together with the Centre for Migration Law of the Radboud University Nijmegen and the Amsterdam Center for International Law of the University of Amsterdam have announced a panel discussion on Mediterranean migration by sea.
