Call for papers: Ocean Yearbook Student Prize 2020

The Ocean Yearbook’s annual competition for students writing research papers on “marine affairs” is open for submissions until 15 May 2020. Sole-authored student papers submitted for the competition must be nominated by the instructor or supervisor of the course taken by the student, and must have been submitted for the course within the last 12 months of the competition’s annual entry date.

Call for papers: III TRAMEREN’s International Conference

The Transatlantic Maritime Emissions Research Network is welcoming abstract submissions for a conference on Arctic Environmental and Climate Change Governance.  The event will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, on June 11-12, 2019. The conference seeks to explore environmental governance in the Arctic by examining institutions, actors and interactions in emerging issues in Arctic ocean governance, such as conservation of marine living resources, the use of the marine Arctic for extractive industries, climate change impacts, and maritime transport issues. Call for papers: ESIL Conference, Agora I

The European Society of International Law (ESIL) is hosting its 15th Conference in Athens, Greece on 12-14 September 2019. The theme of the event is “Sovereignty: a concept in flux?” and Agora I, is entitled “Beyond Sovereignty: ABNJ and the LoS”. Possible topics for discussion include the discovery of commercially valuable genetic and biochemical resources, or the use of the Area Based Management Tools, including Marine Protected Areas. Call for papers: Tendencies in Legal Approaches and Instruments for the Protection of Ecological Systems

The Centre for International and Transnational Tendencies in Law at Aarhus University,  Denmark, is hosting a workshop on the transnational development and use of legal norms and other instruments of legal relevance that have an impact on the protection of threatened ecosystems. The workshop will focus on transnational and multi-level aspects in environmental governance and regulation of ecosystems’ protection and international conservation of terrestrial and marine areas. One of the topics of the call is “the effectiveness of the different approaches and instruments (including the use of liability concepts) used in the marine protection”. Call for papers: The EU as a Global Actor in Maritime Security

Leiden Law School is hosting a conference on The EU as a Global Actor in Maritime Security: Competences – Obligations – Accountability. This event is co-organised by four Interest Groups of the European Society of International Law and takes place on 25 and 26 October 2018 in Leiden, the Netherlands. The aim is to explore what competences the EU has to act in the maritime domain, what obligations it is bound by when doing so, and how judicial oversight can be ensured. Abstracts should not be longer than 500 words and submitted no later than 30 June 2018. Call for papers: Congress of Maritime, Port and Customs Law

The Maritime Law Academy in Santos, Brazil, has published a call for papers for its 2nd Congress of Maritime, Port and Customs Law. The event is set to take place on 26-28 of July 2018. Papers may focus on topics such as shipping contracts, sovereignty and jurisdiction at sea, oil and gas, environmental law as well as port and customs law. Call for papers: Frontiers in Ocean Environmental Governance: Private Actors, Public Goods

The Center for Enterprise Liability (CEVIA), the Center for International Law, Conflict and Crisis (CILCC), the Frank Guarini Center, the Center for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), and the European Network Ocean Governance for Sustainability (OceanGov) are welcoming proposals for paper presentations at the II TRAMEREN’s International Conference entitled Frontiers in Ocean Environmental Governance: Private Actors, Public Goods. The African Society of International Law is organizing its seventh annual conference in Antananarivo, Madagascar, on 26-27 October 2018. The topic of this year’s event is “Africa and the International Law of the Sea”. The call for papers features topics such as maritime delimitation in Africa, unresolved disputes over African islands, the economic exploitation of African maritime spaces, piracy in Africa or the effects of sea level rise on the baselines of African coastal states. Abstracts answering this call must be sent until 1 June 2018. The International Association for the Law of the Sea (AssIDMer) welcomes applications for its Prix Daniel Vignes (2ème Edition), “a prize for the best article published in a journal or a collective work, to disseminate knowledge of the international law of the sea”, until 15 April 2018.

The Faculty of Law and the KG Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea (JCLOS), UiT The Arctic University of Norway, will together organize and host the 11th annual Polar Law Symposium in Tromsø, Norway, October 2 – 4, 2018. Call for papers: Transforming the ocean law by requirement of the marine environment conservation

The Human Sea program will be holding its final international conference on 15 and 16 October 2018 at the Nantes Events Center, France. The conference is entitled “Transforming the ocean law by requirement of the marine environment conservation” and its goal is to attempt a synthesis of the legal issues, technological, economic and managerial of the implemented and future evolutions. It will focus on four issues: 1) seabed (continental shelves and international zone), 2) water column (biodiversity and high seas), offshore activities (synthesis on fishing), 3) trade, Marine Renewable Energy, and 4) protection of the marine environment in a highly legal approach (principles of environmental law, regional conventions, EU law). A Junior Conference will be organized on Monday afternoon 15 October 2018, in parallel with the plenary session of the international conference. Call for papers: Multiple Layers of Regulation, Focus on the Baltic Sea Region

The Baltic Area Legal Studies (BALEX) will organize a research seminar on multi-level governance with a special focus on the Baltic Sea Region in Turku, Finland, on 31 October 2017. The keynote lectures are open events. Additionally, researchers can send their papers for further workshop discussions. The research seminar calls for papers which may relate to the following issues: legal relationships between different layers of regulation; the role of non-legal steering mechanisms in policy-making; ecosystem based management and regulatory tools; industry visions of Baltic Sea developments and related regulatory needs, balancing competing interests. Conference: Pushing the Limits of UNCLOS

The 9th edition of the ABLOS conference, organized by the Advisory Board on the Law of the Sea, will address advances and challenges in governing our shared Blue World under the framework of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea from both legal and technical perspectives. Themes to be discussed include: implications of new and developing technologies on the law of the sea, progress towards safeguarding biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), deep seabed mining, legal and technical aspects of defining insular features and the application of UNCLOS in high latitudes.
