The International Organizations Interest Group (IOIG) of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) shall host its biennial Work-In-Progress Workshop, 15 March 2019, at Seton Hall School of Law (Newark, USA). Abstracts must relate to the study of international organizations, with one signature topic of particular note for law of the sea submissions being Beyond National Jurisdiction: Human Activities in the Oceans, Polar Regions, Cyberspace and Outer Space. Abstract submissions are welcome until 1 December 2018.

The Chinese (Taiwan) Society of International Law shall host an ILA-ASIL Asia-Pacific Research Forum, entitled,  International Law and Emerging Powers: New Policy Challenges in the Asia-Pacific, from 17-18 May 2019 at Howard Civil Service International House (Taipei, Taiwan). Numerous areas of international law suggested by the organizing committee would accommodate law of the sea papers. Paper proposals are welcome until 10 December 2018.

The World Maritime University (WMU) shall host its 3rd International Women’s Conference, entitled, Empowering Women in the Maritime Community, 4-5 April 2018 at WMU (Malmö, Sweden). Topics focused on Sustainable Development Goal 5 and gender equality in maritime and related ocean fields are of particular relevance, but submissions are also welcome with a focus on additional SDGs. Abstract submissions are due by 30 November 2018.

Leiden Law School is hosting a conference on The EU as a Global Actor in Maritime Security: Competences – Obligations – Accountability. This event is co-organised by four Interest Groups of the European Society of International Law and takes place on 25 and 26 October 2018 in Leiden, the Netherlands. The aim is to explore what competences the EU has to act in the maritime domain, what obligations it is bound by when doing so, and how judicial oversight can be ensured. Abstracts should not be longer than 500 words and submitted no later than 30 June 2018. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Center for Rule of Ocean Law Studies and Center for Polar and Deep Ocean Development) is hosting an international symposium entitled “Recent Development on the Law of the Sea”. The event will be held 1-2 November 2018 in Shanghai, China. The respective call for papers mentions three themes: BBNJ and Area Based Management Tools, Deep Seabed Mining: Theoretical and Practical Issues and The Polar Regions: Law and Governance. Draft Papers are due 15 August 2018. The Law of the Sea Interest Group of the European Society of International Law (LAWSEA IG), shall host a panel, entitled, International Law of the Sea and Universality, 13 September 2018, at the University of Manchester (Manchester, UK). Abstracts may be submitted until 15 May 2018.

The Maritime Law Academy in Santos, Brazil, has published a call for papers for its 2nd Congress of Maritime, Port and Customs Law. The event is set to take place on 26-28 of July 2018. Papers may focus on topics such as shipping contracts, sovereignty and jurisdiction at sea, oil and gas, environmental law as well as port and customs law. Papers may be sent in Portuguese, Spanish or English. They should be sent until 26 of April 2018. More information is available here (in Portuguese).

The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) shall host a conference on the future of the UK offshore marine environment, entitled, Beyond the Coast 2018, to be held, 26-27 June 2018, at the University of Hull (Hull, UK). Abstracts for 2 minute presentations and posters are welcome until 16 April 2018.

The Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance will organise the VI Strathclyde postgraduate colloquium on environmental law and governance, 3 May 2018, at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK). The deadline for abstract submission is 15 February 2018.

The School of International Law, China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), and the CUPL Branch, Collaborative Innovation Center for Territorial Sovereignty and Maritime Rights (CSCTSMR), will convene a symposium, entitled, International laws at the seas, 15-16 March 2018, held at CUPL (Beijing, China). Abstracts may be submitted until 30 January 2018.

The 7th Colloquium of the AssIDMer will take place the 20 and 21 september 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal. The event is organized by the University of Lisbon, the University of Porto and the University of Tromsø. The theme is The Global Challenges and the Law of the Sea. The call for papers may be found here. It is dividided in three sessions: (I) the role of the International Organizations in the implementation and development of the Law of the Sea, (II) superpowers, international courts and the Law of the Sea: challenges for the global oceans regime and (III) the protection and conservation of the areas beyond national jurisdiction: where do we stand. The deadline for the submission of draft papers is 30 April 2018. The provisional program is already available here.

The Faculty of Law and the KG Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea (JCLOS), UiT The Arctic University of Norway, will together organize and host the 11th annual Polar Law Symposium in Tromsø, Norway, October 2 – 4, 2018. The organizers are particularly interested in receiving submissions related to the following topics: Indigenous peoples in the Arctic region, especially implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; climate change; climate change and the law of the sea; ecosystem management approaches; areas beyond national jurisdiction and polar regions; the future of the law of the sea; fisheries issues; protected areas; navigation issues in polar regions; gender issues in indigenous discourse; seaborne tourism; polar institutions and linkages with global institutions. ICES, the FAO, IOC/UNESCO, ​​​​and PICES shall host their 4th International Symposium, entitled, The Effects of Climate Change on the World’s Oceans, 4–8 June 2018, Washington D.C. (USA). A series of pre-conference workshops will also take place, 2-3 June 2018. Abstracts may be submitted for one of the 18 theme sessions until 15 December 2017.

The Human Sea program will be holding its final international conference on 15 and 16 October 2018 at the Nantes Events Center, France. The conference is entitled “Transforming the ocean law by requirement of the marine environment conservation” and its goal is to attempt a synthesis of the legal issues, technological, economic and managerial of the implemented and future evolutions. It will focus on four issues: 1) seabed (continental shelves and international zone), 2) water column (biodiversity and high seas), offshore activities (synthesis on fishing), 3) trade, Marine Renewable Energy, and 4) protection of the marine environment in a highly legal approach (principles of environmental law, regional conventions, EU law). A Junior Conference will be organized on Monday afternoon 15 October 2018, in parallel with the plenary session of the international conference. The Editors of the Cambridge International Law Journal (CILJ) and the Conference Convenors shall host the 7th Cambridge International Law Conference, Non-State Actors and International Law, 3-4 April 2018, at the University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK). Abstracts may be submitted until  8 December 2017.

The ESIL Interest Group on Law of the Sea shall hold a workshop, entitled, Global Commons and Values in Oceans: What should be the role of the New Implementing Agreement under UNCLOS?, on 6 September 2017, in Naples, Italy. This is a pre-conference workshop on the occasion of the 13th ESIL Annual Conference. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 15 June 2017.

The Baltic Area Legal Studies (BALEX) will organize a research seminar on multi-level governance with a special focus on the Baltic Sea Region in Turku, Finland, on 31 October 2017. The keynote lectures are open events. Additionally, researchers can send their papers for further workshop discussions. The research seminar calls for papers which may relate to the following issues: legal relationships between different layers of regulation; the role of non-legal steering mechanisms in policy-making; ecosystem based management and regulatory tools; industry visions of Baltic Sea developments and related regulatory needs, balancing competing interests. The papers should be sent no later than October 17, 2017. More information is available here.

The American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA) will host the International Law Weekend (ILW) 2017, entitled, International Law in Challenging Times, 19-21 October 2017, at the New York City Bar and Fordham University School of Law (New York, USA). Panel proposals are now being accepted including those concerning the law of the sea.

The 9^th edition of the ABLOS conference, organized by the Advisory Board on the Law of the Sea, will address advances and challenges in governing our shared Blue World under the framework of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea from both legal and technical perspectives. Themes to be discussed include: implications of new and developing technologies on the law of the sea, progress towards safeguarding biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), deep seabed mining, legal and technical aspects of defining insular features and the application of UNCLOS in high latitudes. The event is set to happen on 10 – 11 October, 2017 at the International Hydrographic Bureau in Monaco. Abstracts are accepted until 1st June 2017. More information available here and here.

The Center for Polar and Deep Ocean Development, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, working with Polar Research Institute of China, shall host a workshop entitled, Law and Governance: emerging issues of the polar regions, 20-21 June 2017, at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai, China).

The Twentieth International Congress of Maritime Arbitrators (ICMA XX) will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark from 25 to 29 September 2017. Papers on any subject matter relevant to the practice of maritime law and maritime arbitration of both a procedural and substantive nature are invited. Those wishing to present papers are requested to submit a summary of no more than 250 words by 15 January 2017. More information here.

The 6th Biannual Asian Society of International Law (ASIANSIL), entitled, Asia and International Law in Times of Uncertainty, will be held 25 – 26 August 2017 in Seoul (Republic of Korea). Topics suggested within the call for papers include three Law of the Sea sessions: South China Sea Arbitral Award and its Implications for the Law of the Sea; Maritime Security and International Law;  Protection of the Marine Environment in Asia. A further junior scholars workshop call for papers also includes law of the sea.

The K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea (UiT) and the Elisabeth Haub School of Law (Pace University) shall host a workshop, entitled, Natural Marine Resource Management in a Changing Climate, 13 – 14 June 2017, at the University of Tromsø (Norway). Interested participants are invited to submit an abstract by 1 March 2017.

The School of Law of the University of Milano-Bicocca will host a conference, entitled, Exploring the human element of the oceans: the gender implications of the law of the sea, from 25-26 May 2017, at the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca (Milan, Italy). The 9th MARE People & the Sea Conference will take place in Amsterdam on 5-7 July 2017 under the topic “Dealing with Maritime Mobilities”. This conference will explore the nature of maritime mobilities and the ways climate and environmental change, economic development and maritime activities are affecting their direction and volume. The World Maritime University will be hosting an international conference on Maritime Energy Management (MARENER 2017). This event is expected to provide a forum for both researchers and practitioners to examine opportunities and challenges in the field of maritime energy with the aim of achieving an energy efficient and low carbon future for the maritime industry. The conference will occur in Malmö, Sweden, on 24-25 January 2017. Authors are invited to submit abstracts in English by 30 September 2016. The London International Boundary Conference 2017 will be held from the 5-6 June 2017, at King’s College London (London, UK). The call for papers, entitled, Practical Aspects of International Boundaries and Sovereignty Disputes, has been issued with a deadline of the 6 January 2017. a number of topics may be of interest to those working around the law of the sea.

The Association Internationale du Droit de la Mer has issued a call for papers for its forthcoming conference, entitled, International Tribunals and the Interpretation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to be held 3-4 November 2016, University of Sannio, Benevento (Italy). The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 17 July 2016.

The Collaborative Innovation Centre for Territorial Sovereignty and Maritime Rights (CICTSMR), the Research Institute of Environmental Law (RIEL), Wuhan University, China and the School of Law, University of New England, Australia, have issued a call for papers/abstracts for a forthcoming conference entitled, Conservation of Marine Living Resources in the Polar Regions: Science, Politics and Law. The conference will be held 25-26 March 2017, Wuhan University, China, and the abstract deadlines is 15 September 2016.

The 12th European Society of International Law Conference, How International Law Works in Times of Crisis, will be held in Riga, 8 – 10 September 2016. Whilst a host of interesting forums and agora will be held, those with a particular interest in the law of the sea should consult the agora, Law of the Sea: As ever, between Selden and Grotius.
