Conference: Obligations of States in Undelimited Maritime Areas

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law is holding in London, the UK, an event entitled “Obligations of States in Undelimited Maritime Areas”. This event will analyse and discuss the obligations of States in regard to undelimited areas pending agreement on maritime boundary delimitation. In particular, the event will focus on the obligations of States under Articles 74(3) and 83(3) of UNCLOS to refrain from activities that could jeopardise or hamper the reaching of a final agreement on maritime delimitation. The event occurs on 22 July 2016 and is free to attend, but registration is required. Further information about the venue, the guest speakers and the registration is available here.

Conference: Piraeus International Conference of Maritime Law (9th)

The Piraeus Bar Association is organizing the 9th edition of its International Conference of Maritime Law. This event is the sequel of a tradition established 24 years ago. It will be held in Piraeus from 13 to 15 October 2016 and will deal with Maritime Safety and Security (legal implications to ships, cargo and the human element). Young scholars and practitioners are also invited to participate to an essay competition, the “Young Maritime Prize”. More information about the conference can be found here. Dispute Settlement in the South China Sea: Beijing, Manila, The Hague

The Centre for East Asian Studies Groningen (CAESG), University of Groningen, in cooperation with SIB-Groningen, and the study association Vintres, will hold a guest lecture by Mr. Gou Haibo (Consular and Legal Officer in the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of the Netherlands) entitled, Dispute Settlement in the South China Sea: Beijing, Manila, The Hague. Conference: Legal Order in the World’s Oceans

Virginia University’s Center for Oceans Law and Policy (COLP) is organizing, in cooperation with the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea and the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations, a conference entitled Legal Order in the World’s Oceans: UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. 6th conference in Maritime Spatial Planning Worldwide

The sixth conference of the MSP stakeholder series, focussing on MSP Worldwide will be organised on 8 and 9 June 2016 by DG MARE in University of the Azores, Ponte Delgada, Azores. The conference will present experiences, opportunities and challenges of MSP implementation around the world. In particular it will look at MSP’s economic benefits, its potential as a climate adaptation tool as well as at the role of area-based management regimes in international waters. Conference: International Law and Japanese Approaches – The Law of the Sea and International Peace Operations

On 26 February 2016, the T.M.C. Asser Instituut will organise a Symposium on International Law and Japanese Approaches. The panel sessions will be devoted to two topics: the disputes in the maritime areas of East Asia; and the changing role of the Japan Self-Defense Forces in international peace operations. The Symposium will start with a keynote speech of H.E. Conference: Representations of the (Extra)Territorial

Utrecht University in collaboration with the Exterritory art project has announced an interdisciplinary 2 day conference entitled, Representations of the (Extra)Territorial: Theoretical and Visual Perspectives, to be held from 22-23 April 2016 at Utrecht University. The conference will consist of four panels, addressing respectively virtual reality, the environment, human rights, and general conceptual shifts in understandings of territoriality. Our Ocean 2015: Initiatives

The second Our Ocean conference was held in Valparaiso, Chile from 5-6 October. Participants announced over 80 new initiatives, covering the protection of ocean areas, promoting sustainable fisheries, reducing marine pollution, preventing and monitoring ocean acidification, building capacity, supporting coastal communities, and mapping and understanding our ocean.

Conference: Governance of Arctic Shipping

The Centre for International Law (CIL) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea (JCLOS) at the University of Tromsø are hosting in Singapore a Conference on the Governance of Arctic Shipping. The objective of the Conference is to examine major legal issues relating to shipping in the Arctic and the role of Arctic States, user States and international organisations in Arctic shipping governance. Conference: Operational Maritime Law

The Centre of Excellence Operations In Confined and Shallow Waters is organizing its 3rd Conference on Operational Maritime Law. The event is to occur in Lisbon, Portugal, at the Instituto de Estudos Superiores Militares, between the 21 and 24 of September. The topic of this year’s event will be “There and Back Again: From Origins to Modern Threats”. The event will include presentations/discussions on Law of Armed Conflict, Unmanned Underwater Vehicles, The Mining of International Straits, Maritime Law Disputes on the Horizon, and Freedom of Navigation. Additionally, there will be legal workshops on Rescue and Assistance at Sea and Law Enforcement on the High Seas. Conference: Future-Ready Shipping 2015

An International Conference on Maritime Technology Transfer and Capacity-Building is to occur in Singapore on 28 to 29 September 2015. Conference: Interspill Amsterdam 2015

The Interspill Conference is happening in Amsterdam this year, between 24 and 26 March. It will be held at Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre, the Netherlands, and is co-organised by Reed Exhibitions and Interspill Ltd. The conference will be hosted by the Spill Response Group Holland (SRGH). The event includes an exhibition and focuses on the changing landscape of spill preparedness and response; it also focuses on how activities continue to move into more challenging environments and on how public sensitivities to perceived spill risks has increased. Conference: Human Sea – Espaces marins, surveillance et prévention des trafics illicites en mer

The Maritime and Oceanic Law Centre (CDMO) of the Law faculty of Nantes is organizing a conference on the topic of the prevention and repression against illegal trafficking at sea (narcotics, human beings, weapons of war, illegal fisheries, piracy and violence, terrorism). The Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of the FAO, and The Fisheries Administration (FiA) of Cambodia, will host a conference entitled Tenure & Fishing Rights 2015 A global forum on rights-based approaches for fisheries. It will be held between 23 – 27 March 2015, at the Apsara Angkor Hotel, Siem Reap, Cambodia. UserRights 2015 seeks participation and contribution from the widest variety of stakeholders with an interest in tenure in fisheries and sustainable natural resource use in general and fisheries in particular. The UserRights 2015 forum will provide its participants with a holistic understanding of the concept of rights-based approaches for fisheries needed for advancing and improving the basis for generating practical, constructive guidance for all stakeholders involved.
